Chapter Thirty-Two

The following day, the Glendale Hall Aga was delivered and installed. We had decided that the kitchen needed sprucing up, and as we didn’t have the money for anyone to do it, I told Adam I would decorate it myself. Guests wouldn’t be coming in here, so a new kitchen could wait until we had the money. Adam went to pick up the bathroom tiles he had finally found at a price that didn’t make our eyes water. Outside, the builders were taking down the scaffolding as all the roof tiles were now fixed, and it was a relief that the biggest job was now completed. Inside, the plastering was being finished, so it made sense for me to stay in the kitchen out of the way.

Tabby was watching me, half asleep in his bed, and I had the radio on as I covered the walls in a pretty lemon shade to brighten it up, when I was startled by a tapping on the back door.

I turned round to see Finlay out there. I waved him inside. ‘There was no answer round the front.’

I turned the radio down. ‘There’s a lot going on today.’

‘I’m sorry I left like I did yesterday. I needed a moment, I guess, after finding the letter. And I wanted to talk to my uncle about it all. I wanted to come and find you today. I felt bad for just leaving you like that.’

‘I understand. It was a shock finding that letter. Have a seat,’ I said with a smile. It was good to see him here. After a week of having him with me every day, it had felt strange being here without him.

‘That’s a real spring shade,’ he said as he sat down at the kitchen table.

‘I thought it would make the room lighter, as it’s pretty small.’

He reached down to give Tabby a stroke. ‘I always wanted a cat growing up, but my dad wasn’t keen on pets.’

‘What’s your family home like? In Perth?’ I carried on painting as I asked him. I wanted to know what his life was like there.

‘It’s even bigger than Dove House. It’s in the middle of nowhere. It was always my dad’s pride and joy. He hadn’t wanted to leave. We got nurses in so he could stay there until the end.’

‘That must have meant a lot to him. You don’t feel the same connection to the house, though?’ I asked, turning round.

‘I suppose I never quite felt like I belonged there. It was really hard when I left, but I felt… free.’ Finlay sighed. ‘And now I just don’t know what to do.’

‘You don’t have to do anything right now. Take your time. You’ve had a lot to process.’

‘My uncle thinks…’ Finlay stopped speaking as someone came into the kitchen.

‘I read the letter,’ my mum said as she appeared in the doorway. She noticed Finlay then, and she smiled. ‘Let me give it back to you.’

‘I’m sorry you didn’t get it when you were meant to,’ Finlay said, taking it from her and looking at it in his hand.
